Setting up bolt hunter on a camera and watching it trigger on a lightning strike

Meet Bolt Hunter

The lightning camera trigger designed by storm chasers, for storm chasers. This isn’t just another trigger. It's intelligent, grounded in science, and for the first time ever: predictive.

This project started with a single goal: to build a trigger that doesn't miss.
But we didn't stop there. We added weather sealing, smarter detection, predictive timing, simultaneous triggering and timelapse, shutter lag measurement & reduction, lightning simulation for testing, a brand new night-mode, wireless control, connection monitoring, and so much more.

Not just a better trigger

Bolt Hunter is the ultimate companion for weather photographers.

Product & Buying FAQs

What does “predictive triggering” actually mean?

Bolt Hunter is not predicting when lightning will strike. It responds to optical activity from an event that has already started. Sometimes that activity is detectable before the bright return stroke you see in the photo.

With normal Single Shot triggering, Bolt Hunter starts the camera activation when it detects that activity. The camera still has shutter lag before the exposure begins. Measuring that lag and reducing unnecessary camera delays makes a real difference.

The follow-up behavior is what we mean by predictive triggering. Bolt Hunter keeps responding to activity within the same event and uses your saved shutter lag in its timing. In Single Shot, that can mean additional shutter commands as return strokes continue. In Burst, the shutter command can stay held so the camera can keep shooting in continuous drive.

Pre-Capture works differently: the camera keeps a rolling buffer of earlier frames, and Bolt Hunter uses your configured delay before sending the save command. Read the Pre-Capture guide before setting it up.

None of these modes guarantees another saved photo. The camera must be ready to respond, and its shutter speed, drive mode and recovery time still matter. Here is how we check the timing.

How is Bolt Hunter different from other triggers?

We built Bolt Hunter specifically for lightning photography. It responds to faint optical activity, adjusts to changing light, and can use your camera's measured shutter lag to improve the timing of subsequent exposures.

It also has a built-in intervalometer, Night Mode for BULB exposures, camera timing tests, and an app for advanced settings and updates. The three buttons handle the everyday controls without needing your phone.

See the features or watch the controls walkthrough.

Do I need the mobile app to use Bolt Hunter?

No. You can shoot lightning and record time-lapses using the three buttons. Basic shooting does not need a phone or cellular service.

We recommend using the Bolt Hunter app before your first shoot to check camera settings, measure and save timing, and configure any advanced features you want. Once saved, settings such as Burst, Pre-Capture timing, Night limits and camera Bluetooth can work without the phone.

Some functions still need it: phone alerts and new data downloads need the Bolt Hunter app connected, and app duration or image-count limits need it running and connected to stop a time-lapse. Firmware downloads and online services need internet.

See what you can do without the Bolt Hunter app. The guide includes the newer button shortcuts; availability depends on installed firmware.

Can Bolt Hunter be used with two cameras at the same time?

A 2.5 mm TRS Y-splitter may trigger two cameras, but Bolt Hunter is designed around one camera and its measured timing. We have not qualified splitters for every combination.

Shutter lag can vary, even between two cameras of the same model. A splitter also joins their remote connections, so camera status and timing may differ. Ask us about your two cameras before choosing this setup.

Will Bolt Hunter ever miss?

Every trigger is going to miss some shots, even Bolt Hunter. If a short, single-stroke bolt has no detectable activity before it, it can be over before the camera starts exposing. A trigger cannot remove the camera's shutter lag.

The camera also needs time to recover between photos. A bolt can fall into that gap, outside the frame, or between return strokes during a short exposure. Pre-Capture can help with some timing problems, but brings its own camera requirements and tradeoffs.

Why your camera misses lightning explains what to test. If your camera never takes a photo, start with the guided troubleshooter instead.
